SUMMARY THE PROJECT
This coffee project was developed to offer direct support to autonomous Education and Medical initiatives of Zapatista Autonomous Municipality en Rebellion, Ricardo Flores Magon's. 100 percent of the proceeds are returned to the community.
All persons outside of the community are 100 percent volunteer. In the United States we wholesale the coffee to co-ops, coffee shops and stores who do gain from the sell of the roasted coffee. They are our primary support base.
We do some direct retailing of our own at events and through our personal networks and here on-line. 100 percent of those proceeds going to the Municipality.
THE COFFEE
This coffee is shade grown at high altitude in Chiapas, Mexico.
FAIR TRADE AND CERTIFIED ORGANIC
As of today we are not able to call the coffee Fair Trade or Certified Organic. That process takes years and a lot of money. We will pursue these endorsements, but until then we feel the concept of True Trade best fits our coffee.
OUR FIRST YEAR
This is the first time this community has sold their coffee to be exported. With the help of groups, businesses and private donors both within Mexico and the United States we have legally imported the coffee into the United States.
This is also the first time we ourselves have imported coffee, let alone put together a comprehensive coffee project . Today we have a name, label, great roaster, and many accounts all in place to make this all become a reality. However we do have more work to do.
THE NAME OF THE COFFEE
.The name Cafe Para la Vida Digna comes from the producers themselves. This name was chosen as it reflects what they seek for everyone, a life with dignity. The name was created in the language of Tzeltal and Ch'ol then translated into Spanish and then into English.
